Is MacGyver season 6 happening?

The fifth season of the CBS action-packed drama series MacGyver  is currently airing, making it about five years since the series first debuted in 2016.

With the show running for this many seasons, MacGyver has become rather popular and has gained a pretty dedicated fanbase, but with the series' future looking rather grim, will another run be in the cards for this series? Or is it time to say goodbye?

Is there going to be a season 6 of MacGyver?

Unfortunately for fans of the drama series, there will not be a sixth season ofMacGyverand the current season now airing has been announced to be its final installment.

This may come as a shock to fans, as MacGyver was still getting some pretty high viewership, averaging about four million viewers per episode this season. However, these numbers are still relatively low for the CBS series, especially compared to its debut which garnered a whopping 10 million viewers for the first episode.

Ultimately, these numbers, as well as other factors were prime reasons as to why the show was eventually canceled.

Why did MacGyver get canceled?

As mentioned before, the series was underperforming especially compared to its fellow shows on CBS such as Blue Bloodsand Magnum P.I., but the viewership isn't the only reason the show began to tank.

According to TV Line,MacGyverwasn't doing too well in terms of the cast and crew either. Apparently, there were instances of a toxic work environment and a few not-so-nice comments made towards the Angus MacGyver actor, Lucas Till, which made the star extremely upset and almost drove him to suicide.

The actor told Vanity Fair (per TV Line) in 2020 of the show's former executive producer Peter M. Lenkov:

I've never worked this hard in my life, and I am fine with hard work. But the way Peter treats people is just unacceptable. I was suicidal that first year on the show, because of the way he made me feel. But the way he's treated the people around me — that's just my breaking point.

CBS ultimately cut ties with Lenkov, but of course, some serious damage was already done.

On top of this, the show just couldn't stay away from the bottom of CBS' barrel and the television network didn't have it in them to revive the show for another go.

Despite the hard times faced by MacGyver, Till still sends the show off with a somber goodbye with this post from his Instagram below.

Till may not have to say goodbye just yet, however, as fans of the show are fighting for another season of theMacGyver.

Yep, that's right! Fans of the CBS Original recently launched a petition with the title #SaveMacGyver with a goal of 15,000 signatures. The dedicated fandom demands a "final hurrah" and states in capital letters, "We don't go down without a fight."

Perhaps, CBS or another platform such as Netflix will cave and give the show a proper send-off. Or maybe the fate of the show will depend on whether or not Lucas Till would want to return.

No matter the case, we will be sure to update you on everything there is to know about the future ofMacGyver.
